LEGAL PROCEDURES AND REQUIREMENTS FOR CIVIL WEDDINGS IN GOA

Who Can Get Married in Goa

Marriages in Goa are compulsorily registerable. Only a civil registration of marriages in Goa is accepted as evidence of the marriage. The Law of Marriage in Goa treats a Marriage as a CIVIL CONTRACT, solemnized between two persons or different sex, with the purpose of legitimately constituting a family.

Any boy who is 21 years of age or more and any girl who is 18 years of age or more, can enter into a marriage. A person who has previously married and the marriage is not dissolved, cannot marry again.

REGISTRATION OF MARRIAGE

The parties will have to appear themselves before the judge to get the order which allows them to get married in Goa. Our expert lawyer will guide them through this process.

  • Passport Copies of the bride and the groom
  • No impediment certificate from the local registrar office stating that there exists no legal impediments what so ever for thr wedding to take place. A letter from the embassy stating the same will also do.
  • Birth certificates of both the parties with parents names clearly mentioned on them
  • 4 witnesses from the same country as of the bride and the groom.
  • Residence Certificates of both the parties (What is it)

Once the court order is obtained, both the parties appear before the Civil Registrar for the first signature. Two Sundays need to pass before the second signtaure can be done. The registrar office affixes a Public Notice, inviting objections if any, before these 2 Sundays pass. This is known as the EDITAL PERIOD. In case both the parties can not stay for 2 sundays, the Edital Period can be waived off by producing the flight tickets. If the Edital Period is waived off, the second signature is done on the same day or the next day and a provisional wedding certificated is issued to the parties. Original certificates can be obtained after 30 days which will be couriered to the couple. It generally takes 4-5 working days to complete these formalities.
